  • Take Only What You Need. The third yama on our list is asteya ~ non-stealing or only taking what is freely given. This can be interpreted and applied in many ways. One way you might look at this is to reduce your carbon footprint or reduce your impact on the earth..considering ways to refine how you use earth’s resources. Perhaps, this will inspire you to pull out a seed catalog and plan for Spring. Maybe, you will choose a stainless steel water bottle and forgo the plastic ones. Maybe, it’s using reusable bags at the grocery store. Another perspective on this yama is to consider it in regards to affection or time. Have you ever felt unhappy or resentful because a loved one hasn’t made available the time that ...
  • The truth will set you free. The second Yama is satya or truth. I find it interesting that truth is below non-harming on our Yamas list as a reminder to carefully choose our words to do the least harm (or most good). But this speaks to so much more than just words! Have you ever experienced a moment where you are so comfortable in your skin and in the actions that you are taking and it is just SO evident that you are on the right path? Or…have you ever been in a situation that you are uncomfortable with what is happening and your involvement and you are filled with a knowing that this is NOT your path? These are perhaps a litle dramatized for effect, but I am ...
  • Do No Harm. How did it feel to be more mindful yesterday? We’re going to continue with that idea of mindfulness and move onto the 8-fold path. If you have been in one of my classes and you have heard me talk about this ALOT, you may be thinking “Really, Lanta! Again?” YES! Again and again! I believe it is the way to peace. To begin, I am going to remind you that yoga is an 8-fold path. The 8 folds are : Yamas-restraints of negative behaviors, ethical standards Niyamas- self-discipline, virtues Asana-physical poses Pranayama-breath or prana control Pratayahara-withdrawal of senses Dharana-concentration Dhyana-meditation Samahdi-bliss, Self-realization Today, we discuss the first of the 5 yamas, ahimsa or non harming. It asks you to reflect upon ways in which you cause harm to yourself and others through thought, word and ...
  • The Beauty of Yoga One of the most interesting things to me about Yoga is that it is a more than a series of poses. We can be practicing yoga anywhere at anytime. When we observe ourselves feeling overwhelmed and stop to take a calming breath and re-center. When we reach out to be of service to others with no attachment to the outcome When we find ourself in connection with something bigger When we step up to our best Self again and again Today, I invite you to seek ways in which to practice Yoga off the mat. Create opportunities to be your best Self…in thought, word and deed. Breathe through those moments that conflict with your intention and choose active participation in the life you want to live. Remember to be compassionate ...

  • A Ladies’ Day! I am so excited for today! Last month, when I was feeling overextended and out of joy, I looked at my calendar and chose my first free day, April 1. I laughed at the Universal joke and promptly emailed 4 of my closest friends, asking them to save the date and plan on playing hooky from work or finding childcare as was necessary. Then, I got to think about what 5 moms would want to do on a free day without children or any other responsibilities. I came up with a complimentary yoga class with me in my living room followed by a mimosa. Then, we would head to a local garden center and dream of Spring planting. Lastly, I made ...
